Professional audio system failure analysis and troubleshooting

Mar 28,2023

At present, there are many kinds of professional audio equipment, so many equipments will inevitably have some kinds of faults in use, some are the faults of the equipment itself (hard faults), and some are artificial faults (soft faults) caused by improper use. Generally speaking, the failure of the audio system can be classified into five categories: power failure, line failure, human operation failure, equipment failure, and interference failure. Our main components today are power failures, line failures and human operation failures!

(1) System power failure

The overall power configuration of the audio system is very important. The following points need to be paid attention to:

1. Three-phase power

Generally, places where professional audio equipment is used will apply for the installation of three-phase power supplies. More important places will also use two independent three-phase power supplies. If one of them fails, the entire system will not be paralyzed; even very important The venue will also use a backup power supply like a "UPS" for a computer, which shows how important the power supply is.

2. Separate audio and lighting power

It is best for the audio system and lighting to have their own power supplies, otherwise one is prone to interference, and the other is not safe to work.

3. Total power distribution

It is not enough to have a strong power supply, but also pay attention to the distribution of the power supply: in principle, the mixer and various audio source equipment should have an independent power supply; various peripheral devices should have an independent power supply; power amplifiers and other equipment should have at least one independent power supply. 2 independent power supplies. Each independent power supply is controlled by the corresponding air switch, so it is very convenient for us to switch the equipment.

(2) Equipment sub-power failure

The power failure of the device itself can also be divided into 3 parts:

1. The circuit part of the device itself is faulty

This cannot be ruled out by our general audio engineer, and professional maintenance personnel or equipment suppliers are required for warranty.

2. There is a problem with the power supply to the device

For example, some DC-powered devices need to use transformers, and sometimes the transformers will fail; there is also a problem with the power cord connecting the device, which rarely happens, but there are really good power cords that seem to be fine, but they are not powered on. , and replace the power cord when the fault is eliminated.

3. There is a problem with the device of the plug-in equipment

For example, there is a problem with the socket connected to the device, the power sequencer, etc., the probability of such a failure is relatively high, especially when it comes to mobile performances.

(3) Failure of power supply voltage regulator and plug-in equipment

Nowadays, the power consumption of all walks of life is increasing, so it is difficult to ensure that the voltage of the power supply is within a constant standard range. In this case, many places where audio is used have equipped the audio system with power processing equipment such as voltage regulators. However, when selecting equipment, we must pay attention to the voltage stabilized power and quality of the voltage stabilizer; in some places, the quality of the power socket or power sequencer used is relatively poor, which is also prone to failure.
