How to match power amplifier and loudspeaker

Dec 01,2022

First of all, style. Different amplifiers should be matched with speakers of the same style. This will not only maximize the performance of the audio amplifier, avoid distortion, etc., but also reduce the damage to the speakers. If power amplifiers of different styles are matched with speakers of different styles, the effect will be neither fish nor fowl, or the equipment will be damaged.

The second point is that we are most concerned about the power matching between the horn and the power amplifier (host). Now there are many different opinions in the industry. Some say that the rated power of the power amplifier must be greater than (equal to) the rated power of the horn in order to move the horn; Some say that the rated power of the power amplifier must be more than 30% of the rated power of the horn, and some say that it must be more than twice the rated power of the horn, so that the horn can be pushed well. Otherwise, the horn may be burned in case of large dynamics; Some say that the rated power of the power amplifier is less than the rated power of the horn and still works well

Let's ignore the above statement, let's first look at the physical meaning of the rated power of the horn and power amplifier:

For power amplifiers, rated power generally refers to RMS power that can be continuously output.

For speakers, rated power generally refers to that the speaker can withstand the power of this value for a long time without damage.

From the above two points, it is not necessary that the rated power of the power amplifier is greater than (equal to) the rated power of the horn before it can be pushed. The driving difficulty of horn is mainly determined by its sensitivity and impedance characteristics. A power amplifier with output power less than the rated power of the horn shall be equipped. As long as the volume is not increased suddenly and the power amplifier is controlled within the linear working range (without clipping distortion), the horn will not be burnt; The same high-power amplifier can also be equipped with a low-power horn. As long as the output power of the amplifier is controlled within the range that the horn can withstand, the horn will not be damaged by overload. Therefore, in order to protect the equipment, the key is that the tuner must set the input sensitivity LEVEL of the power amplifier when tuning.

But if you want to discover the best sound quality performance of speakers and power amplifiers, I suggest that it is better to choose JSL Jazz Dragon's power amplifier with Jazz Dragon's speakers, and try to choose the same brand. Jazz Dragon engineers will develop corresponding power amplifiers based on the performance of their own speakers, so as to give full play to the extreme performance of speakers technically. The sales staff of Jazz Dragon will design a reasonable scheme according to the user's site, user and total budget.
