Detailed explanation of the causes and solutions of the mixer crash

Nov 15,2022

The mixer plays a core role in many sound systems. It can not only create stereo sound and beautify sound, but also suppress noise and control volume. It is an indispensable machine for sound art processing. After the sound mixing console is transferred from analog to digital, the digital sound mixing console has become the most important sound mixing console equipment.

As we know, the main feature of the digital mixer is that after the analog signal enters the mixer, the analog digital conversion is performed first to convert the signal into a digital stream, and the internal operation of the mixer is performed in a digital manner.

Therefore, there is no concept of simulation before the signal goes out of the mixer. Once a crash occurs and the processor crashes, normal output cannot be guaranteed. Today, I will talk about the causes and solutions of the mixer crash.

1. External causes

If the external environment of the mixer is not good, the mixer may crash.

First of all, eliminate the factor of power supply

If other high-power electrical appliances are connected to the power supply of the mixer, a large voltage transient will occur when the electrical appliances are started. Instantly reduces the voltage at the power supply terminal of the mixer.

However, the transformer of the mixer itself has limited ability to adjust the voltage change. Once it exceeds the allowable limit, the machine will usually strike; If there is no strike, the abnormal change of voltage may also bring noise into the system.

In addition, in some areas, due to the increase of power load, especially in summer, the voltage may be sufficient during the day. At night, after the increase of power load, the mains voltage at night will decrease a lot. For the digital mixer, if the transformer cannot cope with this change, it may crash.

Secondly, static electricity is also a big hidden danger

The climate in the south is relatively humid. Due to the relatively high air humidity, it is difficult for people and objects to accumulate a large amount of surface charges. In the north, however, the air is relatively dry. People wear clothes of different materials and often accumulate different charges.

In the space where the mixer is installed, carpets are often laid on the ground to control the reflection of sound, but the carpets themselves are not conducive to the charge dispersion. This is more obvious in the relatively dry autumn and winter seasons. As soon as the operator's hand contacted the surface of the mixer, it began to be "electrified". This instantaneous current can produce a voltage of tens of thousands of volts.

When this voltage impacts the circuit, some devices will exceed the bearing limit, and then a crash occurs. So the charge in the room should be evacuated as soon as possible. The carpet with better relative conductivity shall be laid, and the mixer shall be grounded. The operator shall wear less clothes that are easy to generate static electricity, and the electric charge shall be properly channeled.

Dust is a killer of digital mixers

Many musicians have the habit of smoking and often smoke near the equipment, which will cause a large amount of smoke and dust to enter the interior of the machine and accumulate at each contact point and surface painting, which is easy to produce negative effects such as charge and poor contact of the potentiometer.

We can open the cover of the digital machine and judge whether there is dust accumulation with the naked eye. When installing the dust removal device, you can use a powerful hair dryer to remove the dust on the surface. If necessary, you can use precision instrument cleaner to spray it on the place to be cleaned. After the volatilization is completed, you can power on the test. The handling of this situation is effective for mixers that have been used for a long time and lack maintenance all the year round.
